Buyers in the market for a mid-sized luxury sedan are lucky these days, because there is no lack of options, and they're all excellent. Germany can offer the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6 and BMW 5 Series, England counters with the Jaguar XF, and Japan can offer the Lexus GS and Infiniti M...but Acura would like you to consider its new RLX.

Previewed in concept form at the New York Auto Show this past fall, the RLX may not have the badge clout associated with some of its competitors, but what it lacks in prestige it more than makes up for in technological mastery.

The RLX is made almost entirely out of aluminum and high-strength steel to make it some 275 pounds lighter than the RL it replaces. It's powered by a 3.5-liter V6 with such features as direct injection and cylinder deactivation to produce 310 horsepower and 272 lb-ft of torque. It's mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and Acura's fancy new Precision All-Wheel Steer system.

Added to the equipment list are such features as adaptive cruise control, Agile Handling Assist, a multi-angle rear parking camera and a state-of-the-art Krell audio system with cloud connection, all helping the new RLX to emerge as a Best Buy store on wheels. There's even a hybrid version of the RLX in development.

If the RLX drives anywhere near as sweetly as the smaller TL this writer enjoyed driving recently, the new RLX could be the smartest choice on the market.
