BREAKING NEWS: 2014 Acura RLX Prototype Spied!
by Brenda Priddy on 06.12.2012 12:09

We’ve seen the concept, but here are the very first photos of an Acura RLX prototype on the road! Actually, this went right from an enclosed transporter into a secure garage—but we managed to snap a couple of distant photos before the RLX was tucked away for the night. Its testing partner this week happens to be a BMW 535i.

Acura’s soon-to-be newest flagship debuted in “concept” form at this year’s New York Auto Show, and will likely reach dealerships in early 2013 as a 2014 model.

This prototype is sporting Acura’s “Jewel Eye” LED dual-stacked high-intensity headlamps, which will surely become the RLX’s signature.

Although car companies don’t usually talk about future products—even when concepts are introduced—the Acura RLX press release tends to spill the beans regarding powerplants: A 3.5-liter direct-injected VTEC V6 and Sport Hybrid SH-AWD, mated to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission to produce over 370 horsepower and offer 30 mpg city and highway (in the concept model), but Acura also mentions a 310-horsepower front-wheel drive version.

Read more in the Acura RLX intro press release below. In the meantime, we’ll be staking out the garage!

I see LED headlamps! Just like what was seen on the concept. Very pleased with what I'm seeing so far in these spy shots. The RLX has really clean look no matter where you look. I hate seeing exhaust tips and mufflers peaking out on luxury vehicles, seems like Acura might of integrated the exhaust exits to the bumper for a cleaner look.
That is what a lot of Luxury cars do.. look at the previous TL the exhaust exists look like they are a part of the bumper...

More pictures!

There are some pretty good details revealed in these shots. For one thing, we can see from the sidewall of the tires that this RLX is wearing 245/40R19s. Perhaps more important is the load rating - 98Ws. That corresponds to a max load rating of 1653lbs per tire. The current RL SH-AWD has 96Vs (1565lbs per corner) so that indicates that this is model is most likely a Sport-Hybrid AWD model and it is probably heftier than the outgoing model by 100-200lbs. At this point, we're guessing the listed curb weight will land in the 4200-4300lb range.

thank god we didn't go those ugly wheels the concept has, i'm starting to like the RLX even more now, I just wish the wheels had more VIP styling into them, kinda like what Benz's have.

i agree as well, but the rims now still could use some work!
Looks like they kept those concept headlights.
I really want the integrated exhaust outs, but looking at this prototype, it seems like they don't have it at all. Looks like they mounted the exhaust system closer to the body and assuming it's pointed down.
They just did a similar thing today with the 2014 MDX. Same camouflage and all. And it looks like they're slimming down the body type and putting the "Jewel Eye" LED headlights along with it.

Looks pretty slick.

YUP! There's a thread with pic's of the new RDX in this thread
Instead of being slimmer, the spied RDX looks a bit wider in the rear and resembles a BMW X5/X3 (not that it's a bad thing), maybe we can compare the two
